MEDINA SUNRISE ROTARY PRESENTS A CHECK FOR $2,000
TO MEDINA COUNTY DISTRICT LIBRARY
FOR CREATION OF AUTISM SENSORY KITS

Tuesday, June 4, 2019, Medina Sunrise Rotary presented Medina County District Library with a check for $2,000 to support the creation of Sensory Kits in all MCDL locations.

"The kits will be available to all ages but geared toward youth with autism or sensory challenges," said Tina Sabol, Community Engagement Manager for MCDL. "These kits include items that can facilitate a calming affect for people dealing with sensory issues. Items such as stress balls, weighted blankets, noise cancelling headphones and more, will be available. It is often a struggle for families with a child who struggles with sensory or autism spectrum challenges to attend library events or even be in the library. We want the library to be a safe, calm, place all children can enjoy.”

MCDL hopes to have the kits available by the end of 2019. Kits will be accessible at service desks and simply on a shelf for the taking in children’s departments. “When a child is having sensory struggles we want parents to get the kit and offer their child support without any barriers. These kits don’t have to be checked out. We simply ask families to return the items to the kit when once the child recovers from their stressors.

MCDL already offers Sensory Storytimes and a special Sensory Santa visit during the holiday season. Staff worked with parents to determine the need for the sensory kits. When the Medina Sunrise Rotary was asked to sponsor, they were immediately on board. Thank you Rotary!
