During the week of May 21, over twenty thousand Rotarians from around the world convened in New Orleans for the 102nd Annual International Convention.  I was fortunate to be in that number.

My wife and I arrived on Saturday and visited the house of friendship.  We saw many displays of Rotary projects throughout the world.  In addition, there were numerous groups of Rotarians: golfing, skiers, dentists, doctors, travel agents, bikers, and many more.  Throughout the day were various groups (Rotary related) which performed for the attendees.

On Sunday, the convention got underway with the parade of flags.  As each flag and country were introduced the country was highlighted on maps projected throughout the hall.  The country was then placed in its proper location.  There was also entertainment; among which was singing by over 150 exchange students who were in the southern part of the US.

Other sessions included talks by RI President Klingensmith, RI President-elect, Kalyan Banejee and RI-President-nominee Saluje Tanaku.

Also introduced to the attendees were the past presidents of  Rotary and the Rotary Directors.  Other speakers highlighted the various programs of Rotary.  An author, Michael Murphy, spoke on the different needs of the various age groups of Rotarians. It was a very interesting and informative talk.

Taking center stage was a session devoted to the Foundation.  The highlight was a talk by Bill Gates who has partnered with Rotary for the eradication of polio.

The convention was well organized.  Attendees were able to move easily from location to location and throughout the city.  There was a transportation loop from the area hotels to the convention center.  The delegates were very friendly and there was much time for sharing ideas and learning from other Rotarians.

My wife and I stayed a few extra days to enjoy the city and explore the past.  We did go the Mardi Gras Museum.  Next year the convention is in Bangkok and then in Lisbon.  If you have the opportunity, it would be a worthy trip.
